Joyce William, who in her own words is sixty-something years old, is from Yei, South Sudan. She fled her home after heavy violence in her village and arrived in Uganda in March 2017. With the beginning of the rainy season in Northern Uganda, her home and those of her neighbors is surrounded by stagnant water, attracting mosquitoes and causing a rise in malaria cases.

In 2017, Northern Uganda, MSF intervenes due to the daily high influx of people fleeing heavy violence from bordering South Sudan.

The rainy season has brought chaos to Palorinya refugee settlement. The population is facing floods, forcing some to move to drier areas and rebuild their houses from scratch. Many of the trucks bringing clean water to the settlement have got stuck in the mud, delaying water distributions and leaving people short of water for drinking, cooking and washing.

Within a week of noticing a significant rise in malaria cases, the MSF team had established a mobile team to run malaria points, traveling each day to one of the three main zones in the refugee settlement camp. MSF teams in the malaria points test patients for malaria and provide treatment to those who test positive.
